The Latino Fellowship Program

CURRENT LATINO FELLOWS

Vivian Cortes (2008 Fellow)
Vivian received her BA in Pre-Medicine with concentrations in Psychology and Latino Studies from Columbia University in 2001.  Her work has focused on Latino communities through organizations including Aspira of NY, Inc. and Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.  For the past four years, she has worked as a Family Planning Health Educator for Community Healthcare Network where she worked on the development of a sex-positive curriculum, facilitated workshops at schools and community based organizations throughout NYC, and counseled patients around sexual health.  Vivian currently sits on the Speakers Bureau for Love Heals: The Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education. In summer 2008, she facilitated the Love Heals Leadership, Empowerment and Awareness Program (LEAP) for Girls at Mixteca Organization, Inc. In the future, Vivian would like to strengthen and continue her efforts in the field of sexual and reproductive health with a focus on Latinos.  She would like to bring effective programming to Latin American countries to address STD and HIV disparities.

Norma Haro (2008 Fellow)
Norma received a BA in Spanish, Health Sciences, and Linguistics from Rice University in 2002.  Upon graduating, she served for one year with the AmeriCorps Community Health Care Association of New York State program as a medical Spanish interpreter in Albany, NY.  Afterwards, she returned to her hometown of San Antonio and became a certified birth doula.  As the Assistant Director of the nonprofit organization San Antonio Birth Doulas, she has worked with at-risk pregnant teenagers, providing vital childbirth education and necessary parenting skills.  She has also provided labor support during the childbirth process and referrals for services related to pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.  Norma actively participated with the San Antonio Breastfeeding Coalition, the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, and she is a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator in training.  Her professional goals include improving maternity care services in underserved Latino communities and developing programs that will grant greater access to proper care for the Latinos.

Jennifer Bain (2007 Fellow)
Jennifer received a BA in Hispanic Studies from the College of William and Mary in 2005, and went on to work in an organization that provided risk and quality management services to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.   She also served in a number of different volunteer capacities – as a client liaison with Planned Parenthood, a rape crisis advocate at Bellevue Hospital, and media monitor for the New York City Alliance against Sexual Assault.  After receiving her MPH degree, Jennifer hopes to return to work with Planned Parenthood, or a similar organization, to develop educational programs that promote sexual and reproductive health in Latino communities.
